Cryptography is the only tool to protect sensitive data, communication and systems. However, many IT users do not understand how cryptography works and therefore do not use it. The number of PGP keys available is still too low, programmers implement cryptographic routines wrong and even information security professionals often don’t understand what cryptography means, as long as they get a paper that says 256 bit.

It is therefore vital to train everyone involved in IT security in cryptography. To do this scientifically sound, we developed didactical methods to teach cryptography. Based on the concept of professional action competence we created several tools and methods for the effective and efficient teaching of cryptography.

This talk will introduce our research findings and show how to create a training for cryptography that works.
